Abstract

This paper deals with a global reconsideration of one of the longest Etruscan texts. Despite the common agreement on the juridical nature of this text, scholars have proposed different interpretations about its content. As usual in Etruscan long inscriptions, many terms represent hapax legomena and the syntax is sometimes difficult to analyze, but the increased knowledge in Etruscan studies makes it possible to suggest some new hypotheses. Some observations concern the layout of the text, which shows a division in sections and peculiar line breaks. Recent lexical interpretations are here recalled and new ones attempted, taking into consideration the nature and the function of the text bearer. Although the whole meaning of the text still deserves a discussion, the relationships between the subjects of this transaction, Aule Velθina and Larθ Afuna, can be reconsidered in the light of the expressions which define fields or surfaces and their extentions.
