“Ici” ou “ensemble”? Sens et emplois de l’adverbe θui en étrusque.

Abstract

A causa di una tradizione nata alla fine dell’Ottocento, la parola etrusca θui si suole tradurre con “qui”. Tuttavia, secondo noi, questo significato contravviene doppiamente al sistema della lingua etrusca: dal punto di vista lessicale (θu- non è il tema atteso per un avverbio deittico) ma anche dal punto di vista morfosintattico (l’uso di θui con verbi di stato e di moto contraddice la prevista opposizione tra situazione e movimento). Inoltre, questo significato è, a nostro avviso, incompatibile con alcune occorrenze del termine.
L’ipotesi difesa in questo lavoro è che θui sia il locativo-strumentale del numerale θu “uno”. Il suo valore originale doveva quindi essere lett. “unamente” (cfr. lat. ūnā). Da lì, θui poté fungere da avverbio con il senso di “insieme, allo stesso tempo”, poi da particella in verbi composti come θui ces- “porre in tomba” (lett. “porre insieme”; cfr. lat. condere) o θui ar- “portare via, rimuovere” (lett. “portare insieme con sé”; cfr. ted. mitnehmen) e addirittura da adposizione, con il senso di “conformemente a”.

Due to a tradition dating back to the end of the nineteenth century, the Etruscan word θui is usually translated as “here”. However, in our opinion, this meaning is doubly inconsistent with the Etruscan language system: from the lexical point of view (θu- is not the expected stem for a deictic adverb) but also from the morphosyntactic point of view (the use of θui with verbs of state and movement contradicts the expected opposition between state and movement). Furthermore, this meaning is, in our view, incompatible with some occurrences of the term.
The hypothesis we wish to defend in this work is that θui is the locative-instrumental of the numeral θu “one”. Its original meaning therefore must have been “in one way/time” (cf. Lat. ūnā). Hence, θui could be used as an adverb meaning “together, at the same time”, then as a particle in phrasal verbs such as θui ces- “to entomb” (lit. “to lay together [in a tomb]”; cf. Lat. condere) or θui ar- “to take away, to remove” (lit. “to bring together with oneself”; cf. Germ. mitnehmen), and finally as an adposition meaning “in conformity with”.
